Asian Architecture (ARC 2126)

Project 1 allows us to analyse and discuss in depth on the selected research area based on the assigned building, within the framework of sustainable design.

We were to Identify significant elements of sustainable design through investigation on the assigned building.

Produce, orally and in writing, a critical interpretation of sustainable design of the assigned building.

A paper (3,000 to a maximum of 4000 words, double-spaced).

A power point presentation (10 minutes) – which contains an outline of the paper covering key issues and themes explored, as well as bibliography

The submission of this peroject was split into a few submissions in which allows us to complete the paper properly step by step.

     1. Submission of topic and issue            28 Apr 2015            10%

    2. Paper presentation                          26 May 2015           10%

    3. Abstract submission                        26 May 2015           10%

    4. Paper submission                            09 Jun 2015             20%

Project 1: CASE STUDY PAPER

Topic and Issue

For this submission, we were required to analyse and identify the appropriate title and topic for our case stufdy paper. This requires us to do an indepth research on the chosen building and look for a specific topic to concentrate on. About 5 research question should also be prepared to help us develop and write our paper based on our topic at hand. Along with this, suitable reference materials and concise annotation were also needed. To ensure everything is clearly shown, a concept mapping was also needed to allow good visual communication for the design.

Paper Presentation

After the first submission we were required to further our research and present them in a 10 minute verbal and powerpoint presentation. This presentation will showcase our understanding of our research topic.

Abstract

Once the presentation was complete, an abstract submission was required. This needed us to do research and answer all of our research questions in a general form to ensure we were clear of what we were doing and the points that needs to be taken.

In conclusion, in completino of this project, I've have realised the importance of communication and soft skills. Having to go and interview Ar. Choo Gim Wah to obtain more useful and indepth information of the Deck House has given me the opportunity to further develop my soft skills. Time management in terms of organising the entire project from the start is also something that I've found very useful. Due to this, the span of which is needed for my to complete this project was in an orderly manner. The urge and feel to learn more, in terms of my reaserch topic gave me a sense of responsibility to obtain all necessary information rather than having to wait for the information to come to me. This was definately a valuable lesson that I've learnt during this entire project. Team work, within the same chosen buildng was also helpful in obtaining more information.

Project 2: DOCUMENTATION STUDY

This project needs us to work in a group of 5 members to describe the histoicla development of the main strands of Asian Architecture. We were required to identify a broard range of issues related to the historical and choronological transitions of Asian Architecture history. We were to interpret architectural language in relation to the development of Asian Architecture and urbanism based on the the mes of tradition, modernity and globalization.

In the group of 5, we were to select a street in which captures any architectural elements (door/ window/ roof/ wall/ floor & etc) as visuals/ symbols that construct the semiotic interpretation of the street, or its iconography. The architectural elements may take reference from the following respective categories;

     1. East Asian (particularly Chinese) architecture

     2. Indian Architecture

     3. South East Asian Architecture

     4. Modern and Post-Modern Architecture

Our observations shoudl be captured in photography series and a written summary. The summary should portray the critical interpretation of the archietctural semiotics of the street, supported by our understanding of the origins of the architectural elements. These photos and summary are to be produced in an online A4 size photobook and an A2 size manual sketched street map that reflects the srchitecture iconography of the street.

In conclusion, in completion of this project, I've have realised the importance of communication among our group members. Team work and the allocation of work is exceptionally important in the attempt to complete this project. The developments within the vicinity were indeed to ensure they are complementary in scale and in character and do not deteriorate the charater of the current area. This can also be implied to the group during this project, Each of us have had individual opinions and interpretation but through proper communication and adjustements, we managed to come up to a conclusion which served us all in a positive manner. Having a group which work in a system definitely proved to me the positive and amazing side of this team.
