Architecture Design Studio 6   (ADP)

Project 1a: Developing an Architectural Position

           (Portuguese Settlement, Malacca)

This module is a thematic studio based on the theme of “sustaining humanities’’—architecture for people, place and time. Designing for sustainability has been a fundamental issue for architects in our time within global and regional contexts. In line with the current discourse on sustainability, It upholds the belief that architecture can create better places, that architecture can affect society and humanity, and that it can have a role in making a place civilized by making a community more liveable.

The objectives of this assignment are as follows:

1. Develop a simple brief for an architectural design project

2. Conduct pre-design analysis to inform the design project

We were required to:

1. Formulate a simple brief that includes an appropriate architectural programme and planning within a selected architectural context

2. Analyse case studies to gain an understanding of architectural responses and intentional design strategies to inform the design project

3. Conduct contextual and user analysis in the pre-design phase.

Based on that, we were needed to conduct and present the following pre-design analysis: to :

1. Studies of the contextual conditions of your site

2. Studies on your selected user group and building types

3. Studies on precedents that inform the ideas/approach/strategies underlying your design project

In a GROUP : Multimedia/digital presentation (Site analysis) [7.5 mins – 15 mins]

The presentation were to conclude with a simple design brief that includes broad proposals about:

1. Potential architectural ‘positions’

2. The main and sub-topics of exploration

3. The proposed building type

4. The major user group

5. The schedule of accommodation (with indicated areas)

Project 1b & 1c: Detail Design | UNESCO Centre

(The Jamboree Cultural & Community Centre, Portuguese Settlement, Malacca)

Building on the design brief and pre-analysis of context, user and programme presented in Project 1a, a building that delivers a strong relationship to place, people and time was needed to be designed. It is imperative for your design to be environmentally sustainable. We must also be knowledgeable of the materials, services and construction systems employed in the building, while adhering in principle to regulatory by-laws (UBBL) and fire regulation.

The building must be no larger than 2000m2 (including covered circulation) and not less than 3, but not higher than 5-storeys.

As a guide to specific use, the final building should take into account the following, with approximate percentages to be used as a guide:

• 10% staff accommodation

• 15% administrative space (offices, storage)

• 20% circulation

• 25% public space (restaurants, shops, library, toilets, MPH)

• 30% programme-specific space (eg. classrooms, kitchens, lecture halls, etc)

The building should also allow for a minimum of 20 car-park spaces and a loading/unloading space for a minimum of 2 trucks. The scheme must also provide for a proper drop-off zone for your users. Appropriate landscape space should also be included.

For the chosen site and programme, produce a formal architectural design strategy in response to the proposed project.

1. The design should explore and express your position in architecture, and synthesize issues relating to programme, user, site and other regulatory requirements.

2. Consider and include expanded aspects of design development in tandem with the design of spaces, e.g. regulatory requirements, fire safety, materials, construction, sustainability, feasibility and other relevant considerations, wherever possible, integrating their development to produce a richer, more multi-layered design.
